Preventive Care

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is not the only enemy; the main cause of tooth loss in adults is due to gum disease. Recent research indicates that untreated, or undiagnosed gum disease can be linked with heart disease and may be more important to a long healthy life than cholesterol levels.

Vicki or Angela will make a full assessment of your gum condition and supporting bone levels and construct a plan to enable you to achieve and maintain healthy gums. They will advise you on oral hygiene techniques tailored to your needs, gently remove the hard deposits that build up on teeth and will painlessly remove surface stain. Vicki or Diana will help you optimise the day to day care of your mouth and treat any gum disease that you may have.

In order to maintain healthy gums and fresh breath you will want to visit your hygienist as she plays a key role in the ongoing maintenance of your oral care.

Fissure Sealant

Sealants are a safe and painless way of protecting your children’s teeth from decay. A sealant is a protective plastic coating, which is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant forms a hard shield that keeps food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay.

Some teeth naturally form with deep grooves which will need to be sealed, others with shallow ones which will not need sealing. The process is usually quick and straightforward taking only a few minutes per tooth. The tooth is thoroughly cleaned, prepared with a special solution, and dried. The liquid sealant is then applied and allowed to set hard – usually by shining an ultraviolet light onto it.
